Certification - ISAR Certification

To qualify for ISAR’s C.A.P. designation, members must provide documentation that they have met all educational and skill requirements as outlined below. These requirements have been formulated by some of the leading astrology teachers in the world.  A Certification Committee reviews all exams and documentation. Upon successful completion of all requirements, applicants will be granted ISAR C.A.P. (Certified Astrological Professional) status.

These modules may be taken in stages and in any order.  Records are maintained by ISAR until all requirements are fulfilled and C.A.P. is granted.

ISAR Consulting Skills Training

This 16-20 hour intensive training program is designed to give astrologers basic listening and empathy skills that facilitate the astrologer-client relationship in the consulting session. Integrated with the basic principles of chart interpretation, these active listening and communication skills provide the astrologer with ability to respond to clients’ most personal thoughts and feelings and in this way help clients be fully understood.  Emotional understanding is a key ingredient in forming a trusting relationship with our clients and we need to respond in a way that imparts astrological information with compassion, understanding and sensitivity.

This training is required to obtain ISAR’s CAP designation although anyone who plans to do client work will surely benefit and can join in the training session. Applicable consulting skills can be attained through ISAR Consulting Skills workshops or other consulting or counseling skills sources recognized by ISAR.

ISAR Consulting Skills Training is scheduled as follows:

  • At the OPA Astrologer’s Retreat on beautiful Sanibel Island, Florida, ISAR will be hosting a pre-retreat ISAR Consulting Skills training session on Sunday, September 23 – Tuesday, September 25, 2007. Due to the necessity to assign trainers and prepare materials, registration must close on September 1, 2007.
  • At the United Astrology Conference (UAC) in Denver, Colorado in May of 2008. This Consulting Skills training session is scheduled for Monday, May 12 – Wednesday May 14, 2008. Due to the necessity to assign trainers and prepare materials, registration for the ISAR Consulting Skills Training at the United Astrology Conference (UAC) will close April 1, 2007.

The fee for the course is $295.00 USD and can be paid by credit card, money order or personal check. Contact Richard Smoot for more information. To register, click here .

ISAR Ethics Training Course and Test

Ethics and ethical practices and issues are one of the guiding principles in the field of astrology and within ISAR. The ethics training course sponsored by ISAR is based upon ISAR’s Ethics Code and outlines what ISAR, as an international astrological society, ascribes as ethical practices for astrologers. Ethics awareness training is one requirement of ISAR’s C.A.P. designation but ISAR recommends that all members take the program at least once, either through attending a workshop or watching the DVD recording of a previous class. For questions, please contact Dorothy Oja .

  • The next course in the United States will be held at UAC on May 15, 2008. Register here if you wish to take the program. The training program (approximately two hours) is followed by a one-hour test. Cost for both is $35.

In addition, you can purchase the DVD recording of a previous class .  We will soon have the capacity to offer the test online as well.

ISAR Competency Exam

ISAR does not offer programs that teach astrological technique or interpretation. Those seeking CAP designation must, however, demonstrate competence in astrology by passing an exam. Appropriate training can come from schools and teachers who wish to see their students become certified by ISAR standards.  Schools and teachers are therefore encouraged to examine their own curriculum and upgrade where appropriate.

The exam is given at many conferences throughout the world. It is an open-book test and you can use whatever texts or materials you think you will need. There are three main parts to the ISAR Competency Exam.

  1. 1. Combination of true/false and multiple choice questions.  The material covered is varied and follows the outline contained below:
    a. Overview:  history of astrology, an understanding of the various applications of astrology, basic astronomy as applied to astrology, symbolism, and knowledge of chart calculations.  You will not be asked to actually calculate a chart but various questions on the process will determine knowledge in chart calculations.
    b. Forecasting skills, including secondary progressions, solar arc directions, return charts, transits, eclipses and lunations
    c. Synastry and relationships including chart comparison, composite charts, family patterns, miscellaneous relationships and group dynamics
  1. 2.Short answer questions that may require a sentence or short paragraph.
  1. 3.In-depth essay-type questions on various charts will be asked in order to demonstrate interpretive skills.  These will include a natal chart, a compatibility analysis between two charts, a solar return and a secondary progression with transits.  You will not be required to interpret a whole chart, only the portions that pertain to specific questions. The charts will be provided.

The exam is approximately six hours in length, and a lunch break is given. A passing grade is 70%.  For questions, please contact Chris McRae .

The ISAR Competency Exam can be taken at UAC, on Wednesday, May 21st, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, following the main Conference.  An application must be completed at least two (2) weeks prior to the UAC Conference in order to allow time for processing. The cost is $150.00, and you can register here after your application has been accepted.

Application to Take the Competency Exam

You will need to complete an application form in order to take the Competency Exam.  On the form, you will be asked about your astrological education and your current level of astrological practice.  You will need to demonstrate that you have successfully completed at least three educational electives as described below. Once you have heard from Chris McRae and the education committee that your application has been accepted, you may register to take the Competency Exam.
